One of my favorite things to do with my family is to sit around and dream about where we want to go on vacation in the next several years. This has become even more important as my kids get older and the time I have with them at home becomes less and less. Making a bucket list with your partner or family is really fun. Below are some tips on how to get started.
- Make a List of Where You Have Been - A good place to start is to think about past vacations and what you liked (and didn’t like). If you have a travel partner, you should plan on sharing your previous travel experiences. You may decide that you want to revisit a destination one of you has been to before or to only do destinations that are new to both of you.
- List Your Destinations - This is the fun part now....List all the places you have ever dreamed of going to. At this point, don't use the financial cost as a barrier. This is where I can help clients achieve their travel goals . Where did you want to go when you were a child or a teen? Or maybe just last week? Of course, you should make sure you include the places that have always been on your wish list. Remember, this is not the time to hold back. If you need advice, this is a great time to reach out to me to get some advice on some new up and coming destinations that aren't on your radar yet.
- What are Your Hobbies? - Think about how you like to spend your time at home. Do you love culinary experiences, wine or yoga. These are great things to think about that may affect where you want to travel or how I can enhance your travel experience.
- What Do you Want to Experience? Places are one thing, activities are another. Have you always wanted to go Northern Lights hunting? Or maybe an African Safari? Is it swimming with dolphins in Mexico that calls to you, or diving with sharks in South Africa? This is the step where you get to list all the things you’ve wanted to do. As a couple this can be a fun step of discovery. Just like with destinations, I can help you by letting you know about some of the secrets that only travel insiders know about.
- Prioritize - Your list is probably getting a little long at this point. Now is the time to apply some practical thinking. Look through your destinations list and highlight the 4 or 5 places that mean the most to you. It doesn’t mean you won’t ever see the others, but you do need to start somewhere. Then look through your activities list. Are there any that fit one destination more than another? Add them to your list.
- Set a Timeline - Now you can begin making things happen. This is where you begin to organize your dreams into plans. Consider the time and money you wish to invest in travel. Yes, it is an investment. Remember, travel is the activity where you spend money and return richer for it.
- Schedule a Consultation - When we meet we will align your goals with the practical aspects of your budget and time available. This will give you a plan of where to go and what to do over the next few years. Click on the button below and schedule a complimentary consultation
- Check Them Off Your List - Of course, none of this really means much if you never go. Once you get started, you’ll find that wanderlust builds and builds. Think of all the great stories and pictures you will have to share with your family and friends!

I have long contended that you should work with a travel advisor similar to how you would work with a financial advisor. Bucket list planning is just like planning for your retirement but a lot more fun! When putting together a 5 year plan for travel, I work with my clients to find out what destinations are on their bucket list, when the best times are to travel to these destinations and how much they need to start saving for these dreamy destinations.
It’s important to remember that this is YOUR travel bucket list. So if life gets in the way sometimes, no worries. You are the master of the list and can always adjust it as need be. Click on the button below and we can talk about your bucket list and put a plan together just like you would work with a financial advisor.
